The plain on the north side of Kyrkjevegen has been an important meeting place throughout the history. Here, the regional inhabitants have - at various times – got together for military exercise, animal exhibitions and sports competitions.
The area is connected to the settlements on the other side of the road. Military officers have lived at the Skei-farms since early in the 18th century. In this regard, the farm at Ytre Skei was probably the most important. The first military officers settled here in 1741, and stayed there for 200 years.
It was Nordre Søndfjordske Compagnie which had its rehearsal area on Tåene. In addition to exercising area, there were also permanent “tent houses” here until around 1880. A “tent house” was a military warehouse for local departments in the mobilization army. The tent house was linked to the army scheme from 1628 and often had a central location in the villages, often next to the church. The exercising area was in use until around 1860.
Now, the farmers took over. The first Fjord-horse exhibition at Tåene was arranged in 1864. Such exhibitions were arranged until Nordfjordeid took over as permanent exhibition space for Fjord- horses in 1897. Tåene was also used for exhibitions of cattle and other livestock from around 1875 until present time.
In addition, Tåene was a sports ground in Førde. Between 1920 and 1940, many competitions were held here, in gymnastics, athletics and football.
Today, a part of the old exercising area is utilized for property development projects.
